Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others were hurt in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman got detained at the location and one more individual who ran away following the incident was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene displayed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He believed the explosion had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
