The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside his partner, revealed that he will independently develop this new product within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its colors, that match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated that he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
