Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
